For a one-year TC, 2-stroke vessels can now command $220,000/day. According to brokers, only two independent shipowners have any available tonnage for longer term leases this year, therefore charter rates are anticipated to remain firm. Charterers, in our opinion, have every motivation to pay top dollar for vessel hires. Based on last week's cargo prices, traders who can buy US natural gas and ship it to Europe stand to profit $133 million for just one cargo, which is 74% of the value of a 5-year-old TFDE carrier ($180 million). It's no surprise that the Baltic forward curve for a TFDE carrier prices in rates of $170,000/day in December.
