(Reuters) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Tuesday reported a total of 1,802,470 cases of the new coronavirus, an increase of 14,790 cases from its previous count, and said that the number of deaths had risen by 761 to 105,157.

The epic economic swoon that has followed the coronavirus pandemic could haunt the U.S. for as long as a decade, with the Congressional Budget Office pegging the cost at nearly $16 trillion by 2029.

The CBO, which had already issued a report forecasting a severe economic impact over the next two years, expanded that forecast to show that the severity of the economic shock could depress growth for far longer.

The new estimate said that over the 2020-2030 period, total GDP output could be $15.7 trillion lower than CBO had been projecting as recently as January. That would equal 5.3% of lost GDP over the coming decade. Already, the economic shock of lockdowns and a steep drop in consumer spending has rippled through the economy, with more than 42 million workers losing their jobs since the coronavirus brought the U.S. to a standstill.

"Business closures and social distancing measures are expected to curtail consumer spending, while the recent drop in energy prices is projected to severely reduce U.S. investment in the energy sector," CBO Director Philip Swagel said in a letter.

California is one of 20 states that have seen an increase in COVID-19 cases in the last five days, according to data aggregated by Johns Hopkins University. Cities, including Los Angeles, have seen crowds gather to protest the death of the unarmed George, an African American, at the hands of a white police officer in Minnesota last week.

California now has 115,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 4,374 people have died, the data show. The Golden State recorded more than 3,000 cases in a 24-hour period twice this week, according to The Mercury News.

Coronavirus cases in the United States have been slowly ticking up since the Memorial Day holiday, according to a CNBC analysis of data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

New cases hit a peak of 31,578, based on a seven-day average, on April 10 before steadily falling to an eight-week low of just over 20,600 a day on May 28 — and have been rising ever since. New cases in the U.S. have risen over the last three days in a row with a seven-day average of 21,763 new cases reported Wednesday, the data shows.

Research shows that it can take anywhere from five to 12 days for people to show symptoms from the coronavirus, which may explain why U.S. cases are only just now starting to rise after several states reopened beaches and relaxed social distancing rules over Memorial Day, which fell on May 25. The virus, however, can spread a lot earlier than that and can even be passed along by people who don’t have any symptoms, according to the World Health Organization. Covid-19 patients who develop symptoms are a contagious for one to three days before showing any signs of sickness, the WHO said.

Ser tungt for USA fremover.

The United States surpassed 2 million coronavirus cases on Thursday, less than five months after the first known case was reported on American soil. That grim tally far exceeds the number of infections reported in any other country, and comes as the virus has killed at least 112,000 people across all 50 states.

Amid a worrisome surge in new infections, dismal unemployment numbers and a bleak economic forecast from the Federal Reserve, the Dow Jones industrial average on Thursday suffered its worst day since March. Asian markets fell Friday after the rout on Wall Street, though U.S. stock futures were modestly higher.

Florida on Thursday broke its record for the highest number of coronavirus cases reported in a single day since the beginning of the pandemic.

The Sunshine’s State department of health reported 1,698 new COVID-19 infections — almost 20 percent higher than the previous daily high of 1,419 cases recorded last Thursday.

There are now at least 69,069 reported cases and 2,848 deaths tied to the outbreak in Florida, according to the latest numbers released Thursday.

With coronavirus cases rising in states across the country, Anthony S. Fauci, the top U.S. infectious disease expert, warned waves of infection could come “back and forth” for months and said it could be about a year before things return to normal.

“I would hope to get to some degree of real normality within a year or so. But I don’t think it’s this winter or fall, we’ll be seeing it for a bit more,” Fauci told the British Telegraph newspaper in an interview published Sunday.

New infections are trending upward in at least 21 states across the South and West, prompting some governors to rethink reopening plans and renewing concerns that the country could be a long way from containing the pandemic. Alabama, Oregon and South Carolina are among the states with the biggest increases. Alabama saw a 92 percent change in its seven-day average, while Oregon’s seven-day average was up 83.8 percent and South Carolina’s was up 60.3 percent.

(Reuters) - New coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in record numbers swept through more U.S. states, including Florida and Texas, as most push ahead with reopening and President Donald Trump plans an indoor rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Alabama, Florida and South Carolina reported a record number of new cases for the third day in a row on Saturday, which many state health officials partly attribute to gatherings over the Memorial Day holiday weekend in late May.

Oklahoma reported record new cases for the second day in a row, and Alaska did so for the first time in weeks. Arizona and Nevada reported a near-record number of new cases.

In Louisiana, which had been one of the earlier virus hotspots, new cases were again on the rise with over 1,200 - the most there since May 21.

Nationally, there were over 25,000 new cases reported on Saturday, the highest tally for a Saturday since May 2, in part due to a significant increase in testing over the past six weeks.

Perhaps more troubling for health officials is many of these states are also seeing record hospitalizations - a metric not affected by increased testing.

Arkansas, North Carolina, Texas and Utah all had a record number of patients enter the hospital on Saturday. In South Carolina, 69% to 77% of hospital beds are occupied, depending on the region.

While Utah’s governor announced last week that most of the state would pause its reopening, no state is talking about a second shutdown as they face budget shortfalls and double-digit unemployment. Many went ahead with reopenings before meeting government infection rate guidelines for doing so.

Fears that a second wave of infections is happening - or that states failed to curb their first wave - prompted health officials to plead with the public to wear masks and avoid large gatherings.

Trump still plans to hold his first campaign rally since early March on Saturday in Tulsa, although those attending will have to agree not to hold the campaign responsible if they contract COVID-19.

About a third of the record new cases in the state came from Tulsa County, according to state data. The Tulsa Health Department on Friday said the outbreak was linked to indoor gatherings. Hospitalizations and the percent of tests coming back positive have been steady in the state.

“I have concerns about large groups of people gathering indoors for prolonged lengths of time. It is imperative that anyone who chooses to host or attend a gathering take the steps to stay safe,” said Bruce Dart, the department’s executive director, in a statement that advised people at gatherings to wear masks.

Trump has refused to wear a mask at a series of recent public events.

The number of people sickened with Covid-19 across Texas’ hospitals continues to rise, with coronavirus hospitalizations now up more than 66% since Memorial Day as the state continues to reopen.

Coronavirus hospitalizations, like new cases and deaths, are considered a key measure of the outbreak because it helps scientists gauge how severe it may be.

At least 10 states are showing a rise in hospitalizations, according to a CNBC analysis of data from the COVID Tracking Project.

Kritisk nå!

(CNN) - Ten states saw a record number of new Covid-19 cases this week, and one of them could be the next epicenter of the pandemic.

Florida has "all the markings of the next large epicenter of coronavirus transmission," and risks being the "worst it has ever been," according to Wednesday's projections from a model put together by a team of scientists at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania.

The state joins nine others -- Alabama, Arizona, California, Nevada, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina and Texas -- that are seeing record-high seven-day averages of new coronavirus cases per day, according to a CNN analysis of data from Johns Hopkins University.

Twenty-one states are seeing an upward trend in new coronavirus cases and health experts continue to stress the importance of taking precautions to reduce the virus's spread. Despite the rising number of cases, the White House has downplayed the risks, with President Donald Trump saying in an interview with Gray TV on Wednesday that the virus is "dying out."

At the same time that the White House narrative is at odds with the data, health experts including Dr. Deborah Birx and Dr. Anthony Fauci have been absent from many public updates. Dr. Johnathan Reiner, a professor of medicine at George Washington University, told CNN's Erin Burnett it's because "they tell the truth."

"And the truth is that the pandemic is still very, very active in the United States and that we're not getting back to normal and there are difficult things that the public has to do," Reiner said.

Dr. Fauci: It's 'pretty obvious' the US is not 'going in the right direction' to control the spread of coronavirus

Sonam Sheth 44 minutes ago

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the US's top infectious disease expert, said this week that the US is not headed in a positive direction when it comes to controlling the spread of the novel coronavirus.

"I think it's pretty obvious that we are not going in the right direction," Fauci, the head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, told JAMA in an interview.

He added that new research suggests the virus is now more infectious than it was before but that it does not seem to be making people sicker.

The US has seen a resurgence in new cases since multiple states began reopening earlier than recommended.

Dog uten å ligge i respirator.

WHO says coronavirus deaths could start to rise again after cases accelerated in recent weeks, shouldn’t ‘be a surprise’

PUBLISHED TUE, JUL 7 202012:58 PM EDT

For the month of June, reported Covid-19 cases across the globe have accelerated while the death toll has fallen from a peak in April, Dr. Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO’s emergencies program, said.

WHO officials warn that there’s a lag between rising cases and rising deaths. It takes weeks after contracting the virus to fall seriously ill and potentially die from the coronavirus.

“I don’t think it should be a surprise if the deaths start to rise again. It will be very unfortunate, but it may happen,” Ryan said.

US reports more than 60,000 cases on Tuesday -- its highest single day count

From CNN's Joe Sutton

The United States reported 60,021 new coronavirus cases and 1,195 deaths on Tuesday, according to Johns Hopkins University.

It's the highest number of cases reported in a single day in the US since the pandemic began.

The US is close to 3 million infections. In total, there are 2,996,098 reported coronavirus cases in the country and 131,480 people have died.

The totals include cases from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and other U.S. territories, as well as repatriated cases.

As the number of novel coronavirus cases reported nationwide rapidly approaches 3 million, dozens of hospitals in Florida have run out of space in their intensive care units. Arizona is also swiftly approaching full capacity for ICU beds, while Texas, another hot spot, reported more than 10,000 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday.

Although the fatality rate in the United States has dropped, Anthony S. Fauci, the nation’s top infectious-disease expert, said Tuesday that focusing on that single data point was a “false narrative” that could lead to a misguided sense of complacency. The decline can be partially attributed to the fact that more young people are getting sick, and they generally tend to be healthier — “but that doesn’t mean that you could not get seriously ill,” he said. The U.S. coronavirus death toll has surpassed 128,000.

(CNN)Six months ago, no one thought Covid-19 existed in the US.

The first reported case came on January 21. Within 99 days, 1 million Americans became infected.
It took just 43 days after that to reach 2 million cases.
And 28 days later, the US reached 3 million cases of the novel coronavirus Wednesday.
