Is i magen!

this essay by Nic Carter: https://www.coindesk.com/frustrating-maddening-all-consuming-bitcoin-energy-debate
A lot of these discussions are unfair at the outset by putting bitcoiners on the defensive - critics point the energy usage since it's easy to calculate and then bitcoiners have to justify it. But in reality everyone uses energy all the time for "frivolous" things without having to justify it. Do we make PC gamers defend their energy use? Or people that ride in airplanes or drive cars or use a dryer?
The reason people attack bitcoin in particular is not because it uses too much energy, but because they think the energy is wasted. They don't understand the value provided by a decentralized monetary protocol, instead see it as just "tulips", so anyone using any energy at all is "wasting" it in their eyes. So to respond to an energy critic, you have to move up a level from the discussion about energy, and into a discussion about why having non-state money is so valuable. Once you understand bitcoin's value proposition, then you realize it's a very good use of energy.
That being said, most of the energy used by bitcoin is energy that was either freely available or would have been wasted anyway, so the whole discussion is moot to begin with.

You don't know what you're talking about. Bitcoin mining is voluntary and bitcoin miners only mine bitcoin to make a profit and they turn off their miners when it's no longer profitable for them to mine. Bitcoin mining will use substantially less electricity in 2032 because the block reward will be just 0.78125 BTC and the mining difficulty adjusts every 2016 blocks which is approximately two weeks. This is just a small part of bitcoin protocol rules that Satoshi created.
Bitcoin's blockchain is layer 1 and is used for large payments/settlements/transactions and the lightning network is bitcoin's layer 2 and is used for smaller instant payments/transactions. People are moving hundreds of millions of dollars worth of bitcoin, and often over a billion dollars worth of bitcoin, in every single block, all day, every day. The lightning network can handle an unlimited amount of users and hundreds of millions of transactions per second which is magnitudes more transactions than visa/mastercard can handle.
In 2019, the bitcoin network was getting 74.1% of its electricity from renewables, making it âmore renewables-driven than almost every other large-scale industry in the world.â In 2021, it will be using even more renewables and that only increases with time.
Here's a full report on bitcoin mining that was done in 2019, one year before mining started in Mongolia in 2020 which was banned this year.
There was a Cambridge study done on bitcoin mining in 2020 but 2020 is exactly when bitcoin miners set up shop in the Mongolian region of China and started using electricity generated from coal but that only lasted less than a year because the Chinese government has now banned bitcoin mining in that region of China and they also banned mining bitcoin with dirty energy and now bitcoin can be mined with mainly clean renewable energy once again like it previously was.
Dirty energy just can't compete with clean renewable energy like hydroelectric power which they get as low as 1 cent a kilowatt hour.
Hydroelectric dams even create a large excess of electricity that otherwise goes to waste and that waste is now used to mine bitcoin.
Bitcoin is also mined with energy created from gasses that are otherwise flared off or vented directly into the earth's atmosphere.
Here's another article about bitcoin mining using the electricity that would've been wasted.
Furthermore, proof of work is efficient
Perhaps we should worry about video games or youtube because video games and youtube use more electricity than bitcoin and we all know that's residential electricity so most of that energy doesn't come from renewable resources. Humans really need to generate more renewable energy and rely less on dirty energy. I'm glad that large scale bitcoin mining is driving clean energy innovation because the world really needs it at this time, much like we needed scarce tokenized derivative of inflation and corruption that's kept honest and secure by it's own decentralized ledger of value that can't be forged or hacked, that is, before Satoshi created bitcoin for us.

That article demonstrates that in Texas, during non peak hours, wind powered energy is in such high supply and so low demand that it's basically just excess and can be used to mine bitcoin essentially for free. When winds are low but power is in demand, that same mining operation is actually able to provide power back to the main grid.
A very large percentage of bitcoin mining operations are in locations where energy is cheap. Why is it so cheap? Well, often because it's clean energy that is being underutilized. Not only is it clean energy, it's also in excess supply. Where would this excess energy go if it weren't being used? If it isn't being stored in batteries, then it would be wasted as heat.
It's not a very big issue at all, and as we build and adopt more clean energy infrastructure, it will become increasingly more of a non-issue.
Bitcoin incentivizes cheap power production. Renewable sources are often the cheapest sources of power.
