Enovix Set to Go Public Through a SPAC in Deal Valued at $1.1 Billion

Battery maker is building a factory in Fremont, Calif., to make batteries for wearable gadgets starting this year

Battery maker Enovix Corp. is poised to go public using a blank-check company in a deal valued at $1.1 billion, benefiting from investor enthusiasm for technology to improve battery performance as the world races toward electric vehicles.

Enovix said on Monday it raised $405 million through a merger with a special-purpose acquisition company, or SPAC, and associated private investment.

The company is building its first commercial factory, which will be ready to produce silicon lithium-ion batteries for customers later this year. The small-scale plant in Fremont, Calif., will make batteries for smaller devices such as radios and smartwatches. Enovix is scouting a location for a second factory that will also build batteries for smartphones, and aims to start selling batteries for electric vehicles after 2025.

Significant Results in Long-Term Cycling Ability and Mechanical Durability with NEO Battery’s 100% Silicon Anode Materials

Vancouver, British Columbia – March 29, 2021

Dr. Jong Hyeok Park, Director and Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of NEO Battery Materials Ltd. (TSXV: NBM) (“NEO” or the “Company”), is pleased to announce that NEO has achieved breakthrough results in attaining a highly stable long-term cycling ability using 100% silicon (Si) anodes. The pure Si anode that does not contain graphite anode materials has been successful in demonstrating these results at automotive rates of charge and discharge for over 1000 cycles. With the help of NEO’s proprietary uniform nanocoating technology, the capacity decay, most importantly, was less than 25% after running 1000 cycles.

As Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, said, incorporating silicon into the anode of a Li-ion battery has the potential to improve energy density by 20–40%, extending the maximum range of vehicles by 20%. However, it is not easy to make an anode from 100% silicon nanoparticles that lasts over just one hundred cycles of charge and discharge.

Dr. Park commented, “Our patented elastomer nanocoating layer which has both electronic and ionic conductivity is able to compensate the mechanical stress of the Si anode during a long-term cycling test. Our technology effectively scatters the stress from the Si anode, allowing commercial level areal capacity of >2.0 mAh/cm2.”

“Currently, several evaluations for NMC/Si full cells are underway on NEO Si anode materials. NEO is continuing to develop Si anode material modification technology to manufacture innovative anode materials for next generation lithium-ion batteries at a low and scalable cost,” added Dr. Park.

"Porsche considers battery plant in Germany"

https://www.electrive.com/2021/04/25/porsche-considers-battery-plant-in-germany/

Vi vet at Porsche satser på silisiumanoder til sine high-end-batterier.

"The development does not come as a complete surprise: Porsche boss Oliver Blume had already announced at Volkswagen’s ‘Power Day’ in mid-March that Porsche wanted to pursue its own path in battery strategy – with a silicon-based anode instead of the usual graphite. At the time, Blume said that the Zuffenhausen-based company wanted to work on new materials and more efficient cooling solutions for performance cells for road sports cars and motorsport."

Tesla oppdatering om 4680 battericellene:
"still some work to do"

...

Tesla has been running a pilot factory for the new battery cell in Fremont where CEO Elon Musk has been guiding reaching a production capacity of 10 GWh by the end of 2021.

Today, with the release of its Q2 2021 financial results, Tesla released a rare update about its progress toward that goal:

We have successfully validated performance and lifetime of our 4680 cells produced at our Kato facility in California. We are nearing the end of manufacturing validation at Kato: field quality and yield are at viable levels and our focus is now on improving the 10% of manufacturing processes that currently bottleneck production output. While substantial progress has been made, we still have work ahead of us before we can achieve volume production. Internal crash testing of our structural pack architecture with a single-piece front casting has been successful.

In short, Tesla managed to get some progress done, but they still have more work to do before achieving any volume production.

Om NIOs 150 kWt batteri, som kommer i 2022:

NIO's 150-kWh Solid-State Battery Pack Will Actually Be a Semi-SSB Pack

"According to what Li said at the time, this semi-SSB would comprise “in-situ solidified solid-liquid electrolyte, inorganic pre-lithiated carbon-silicon anode, and nano-scale ultra-high nickel cathode.” The NIO CEO also said that it would have an energy density of 360 Wh/kg. We’ll probably have more details about this solid-liquid electrolyte when NIO starts using the new cell by Q4 2022."

Altså, blir anoden i dette semi-faststoffbatteriet av silisium/karbon.

StoreDot secures $80 million in funding

Israeli battery developer StoreDot has announced the first close of its Series D funding round of up to $80 million, the majority of which has already been secured.

The main investor is the up-and-coming Vietnamese electric car manufacturer VinFast, with whom StoreDot had previously entered into a development cooperation. BP Ventures, the investment arm of the British oil company BP, and Golden Energy Global Investment are also participating in the financing round. Golden Energy Global Investment is fully owned by Liu Jincheng, the founder of EVE Energy, another cooperation partner of StoreDot.

The Israeli company had demonstrated an interim step in 2019 showcasing that their technology could charge the battery of an electric scooter in five minutes. The first development samples were demonstrated to potential partners in early 2021. Then, in May 2021, the cooperation with EVE Energy was announced, which includes the production of the cells from 2024.

According to StoreDot, the money from the D financing round will be used to develop the XFC battery cells. This refers to the company’s fast-charging electric car battery cells with a silicon-dominated anode, which should also enable high energy densities. “We are now properly funded to take our silicon-dominant XFC cells to the end of the R&D phase and into scale-up in readiness for mass production in 2024 for global vehicle manufacturers,” says StoreDot CEO Doron Myersdorf. “It will help overcome the major barrier to EV ownership – charging times – providing a 50% reduction, and, ultimately, helping us all achieve a zero-emissions, clean world.”

VinFast plans to use these battery cells in its vehicles. “Enhancing customer experience is our top priority,” says Pham Thuy Linh, deputy chief executive officer of VinFast. “StoreDot which is led by gifted scientists and experienced entrepreneurs, along with strong support from VinFast and other strategic investors, is believed to gear up for mass production globally in a very near term.”

StoreDot also says it will be able to ramp up its California R&D centre with the funding. StoreDot had announced the move in October.
