TOMRA FOOD SHOWCASES SENSOR-BASED SORTING SOLUTIONS FOR THE CONFECTIONERY INDUSTRY AT PROSWEETS 2020

TOMRA Food will be present once again at the ProSweets 2020 in Hall 10.1 stand G-018 to showcase its state-of-the-art sweet sorting systems for confectionery.

Bjorn Thumas, TOMRA Food´s VP Business Development, Product Management Food Sorting & Marcom Food explains: “While the confectionery industry hadn’t invested in sensor-based sorting technology until very recently, most manufacturers are now turning to these solutions to achieve the consistent quality levels and reliable separation required by their customers. This is a fast-growing market that presents a huge opportunity for TOMRA. Our sorters are meeting with great success in the markets for their ability to provide a complete solution, and this year we have installed our sensor-based sorting systems in Germany, the United Kingdom and in the United States, where they are achieving excellent results for our customers.”

TOMRA uses advanced technology for the reliable sorting of sweets. Product color and structure is checked by laser scanners. In addition, the scanners identify contaminated products or foreign objects that are not visible to the naked eye. When augmented by an Advanced Foreign Material Detector (AFMD), sorting can be supplemented to include product-specific properties. TOMRA has developed special high-resolution cameras for optical food sorting based on color and outline. A further module for shape recognition ensures that, through scanning, individual products comply with the desired dimensions and shapes.

Two solutions for confectionery applications

TOMRA offers the Nimbus free-fall sorter, which stands out for its capability to sort a variety of products – such as sugar-free, with-sugar and multivitamin sweets – with a variety of programs and applications, all on the same platform. This solution is in demand in the European markets, where factories produce a variety of confectioneries and need to guarantee a product free of cross contamination to their customers.

On the other hand, the Genius optical belt sorter uses advanced high-resolution camera and laser technologies in different inspection zones to reliably detect cross contamination, starch and foreign materials, as well as identifying clumping and misshapen products. This model is particularly well-suited to the North American market, where confectionery factories tend to be focused on a single product and require not only the identification of foreign objects, but also the type of shape analysis the Genius provides.

Swizzels Matlow, one of the longest-running sugar confectionery manufacturers in the world, is one of TOMRA’s satisfied customers. TOMRA installed a Nimbus free-fall optical sorter in their factory in the United Kingdom to automate the sorting process of the “Drumstick Squashies” with the aim of increasing production to meet growing demand while ensuring consistently high quality and safety of the product. The system has been running for more than a year with excellent results.

Tomra Sorting (G018), whose products are distributed in Spain by Luciano Aguilar, has put on the rise of advanced technology for the precision classification of sweets. It has also included laser systems to verify colors and structure. These scanners can identify contaminated products or foreign objects that are not visible to the naked eye. In addition, this resource allows to combine with an advanced detector of foreign materials, which allows to expand the classification range with specific properties of the product. To do this, the company has developed special high-resolution cameras for optical classification of food based on color and contour. An additional module for shape recognition, ensuring that through scanning individual products meet the desired dimensions and shapes, which is two solutions for confectionery applications.

Tomra has also introduced the freefall classifier Nimbus, which stands out for its ability to classify a variety of products, such as sugar-free sweets and multivitamins, with a variety of programs and applications, all on the same platform. This solution has high demand in European markets, where factories produce a variety of confectionery products and need to guarantee their customers a product free of cross-contamination. On the other hand, the Genius optical strip sorter uses advanced high-resolution camera and laser technologies in different inspection areas to accurately detect cross-contamination, starch and foreign materials, as well as to identify agglomerated and deformed products.
