In one of the most sensational days of tanker trading ever VLCCs climbed back into six-digit territory as Saudi Arabia moved to flood the markets with oil, taking a huge swathe of ships on subs.

VLCCs, trading in the doldrums for around $18,000 last Friday, were booked on subs today for up to $241,949 a day as Saudi Arabia and Russia fight it out for oil supremacy. More remarkably, Saudis were willing to pay top dollar for the most prompt tonnage available, with non-scrubber fitted ships actually reaping higher bids than their HSFO burning sister vessels.

As with six months ago, however, the sensational spike seen on Tuesday might not materialise. The last time there was a spike close to this scale – in September last year – the deals for tankers on subs at the most stratospheric levels failed to materialise.

“It’s completely mad. Days like these are unheard of, and the cash put down on the table for these tankers are frankly mad and unsustainable,” one veteran London-based shipbroker told Splash today after a frenzied 12 hours of fixing.

Saudi Arabia finds itself in a fight with Russia over crude after negotiations to limit production output came to an acrimonious end over the weekend.

De forente arabiske emirater kaster seg på oljepriskrigen

Adnoc (Abu Dhabi National Oil Company), det statlige oljeselskapet i De forente arabiske emirater, kaster seg på oljepriskrigen.

Nyhetsbyrået Bloomberg melder onsdag formiddag at Adnoc planlegger å øke oljeproduksjonen til fem millioner fat per dag. Ifølge Bloomberg betyr det en økning på én million fat fra det landet produserte i februar.

Det kommer etter at det tidligere denne uken ble klart at Russland ikke vil forplikte seg til å videreføre produksjonskuttene Opec og Opec+-landene tidligere hadde blitt enige om.

Som en følge av dette ble det også klart at Saudi Arabia, gjennom sitt statlige oljeselskap Saudi Aramco, girer opp produksjonen av olje. Fatprisen for brent spot er onsdag ned over fire prosent og handles til rundt 36 dollar.

(Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's National Shipping firm, Bahri, has tentatively chartered as many as 14 super-tankers to ship crude oil to customers worldwide, as the Kingdom follows through with its promise to boost crude oil output.

The spike in bookings by Bahri, which owns a fleet of 42 very large crude-oil carriers (VLCC) super-tankers, has helped to more than double super-tankers shipping rates amid this week's 'fixing frenzy', shipping sources said.

VLCC tanker rates along the Middle East Gulf to China route have more than doubled to about $70,000 per day on Wednesday, up from about $30,000 per day on Monday, according to several ship broking sources.
