What is Ethanol Fuel?
Over the last ten years, the emphasis on reducing fuel emissions has been an agenda for many governments. In a bid to reduce their collective carbon footprint, many people have started looking for a way to control their impact on the environment. It is due to such a situation that the use of Ethanol fuel has increased in many countries. However, those wanting to switch to a different type of fuel have many questions about Ethanol. Many of these are concerned with what this fuel really is and how big a dent it makes in our lives and pockets.

Ethanol, which is sometimes known as ethyl alcohol, is a kind of alcohol derived from corn, sugarcane, and grain or indirectly from paper waste. It’s also the main type of alcohol in most alcoholic beverages obtained as a result of fermentation of a mash of grains (gin, vodka, and whiskey) or sugarcane (rums). It’s also a source of fuel commonly blended with gasoline to oxygenate the fuel at the gas pump. Ethanol fuel can also be used on its own to power vehicles.

Ethanol is more common in our lives than you may think. After all, any alcoholic beverage you can drink comprises of Ethanol. It is known by many different names such as Ethyl alcohol, pure alcohol and grain alcohol. It is regarded as an alternative form of fuel that has gained much popularity for a number of reasons

Taurus offers cost-effective and eco-friendly production of ethanol
Taurus Energy AB is undertaking a large-scale commercial development project involving ethanol production. The research is being conducted, and has been conducted, by leading international scientists and has resulted in over 70 patents in 13 patent families so far.

Taurus Energy is providing a new method for production of ethanol from forestry and agricultural waste. The method, which is protected by 13 internationally-patented microbiological processes, makes it possible to produce ethanol using renewable raw materials that could not previously be utilised. Taurus Energy’s method represents major environmental gains, while also dramatically reducing the production costs for ethanol compared with existing methods.

Those responsible for the new method of ethanol production from forestry and agricultural waste are a research team consisting of prominent experts from eight countries. Since many different raw materials can be used – such as straw, stalks from maize and sunflowers, and waste material from forestry operations – the method can, in principle, be used by producers throughout the world.

Taurus Energy’s business concept is to license energy producers on a global market to use this method.

Ethanol as an engine fuel is rapidly gaining ground, in part as a result of rising oil prices and ever more stringent international environmental legislation. The global market for ethanol as an engine fuel is expected to soon total more than SEK 300 billion per year.

The principal owner of Taurus Energy is Avanza Pension.

Taurus Energy is located at Chalmers Teknikpark, Gothenburg.

thanol production from cellulosic feedstocks such as corn stover, straw and sugarcane bagasse can be summarized in four steps:

Pretreatment: The raw material is crushed and heated together with weak acid to release most of the pentose sugars (i.e. sugars with five coal atoms) from the hemicellulose fraction of the biomass. This is known as hydrothermal pretreatment.

Hydrolysis: Water and enzymes are added to release the rest of the pentose sugars from the hemicellulose and most of the hexose sugars (i.e. sugars with six coal atoms) from the cellulose fraction of the biomass. This is known as enzymatic hydrolysis.

Fermentation : The now free sugar molecules are fermented into ethanol with a genetically modified yeast such as Taurus Energy’s XyloFerm®, which ferments both glucose (hexose) and xylose (pentose). Taurus’ technology can for instance increase the ethanol yield from the corn crop by up to 40 % by also utilizing the hemicellulose fraction of the plant.

Distillation : The fermented solution is distilled to purify and concentrate the produced ethanol.
